Cigar Lounge FAQs and Etiquette for Beginners: Your Guide to the Erie, PA Cigar Scene

Introduction to the Growing Cigar Culture in Erie, PA

The cigar culture in Erie, PA, is flourishing, bringing together enthusiasts who appreciate the art of cigar smoking. Whether you're new to the world of cigars or a seasoned aficionado, Erie offers a welcoming and sophisticated environment to enjoy this timeless tradition. At the heart of this burgeoning scene is The Brig Cigar Lounge, a haven for cigar lovers looking to savor premium cigars in an upscale setting.

We noticed that it was a bit of a pain in the ass to smoke cigars indoors around here and decided to begin fostering the cigar culture of Erie with a new location, somewhere we could all go to enjoy a premium cigar, whether it’s our first or hundredth.

Luckily, with the help of our great partners in Erie, we’ve been able to create the new mainstay of Erie’s cigar culture right on State Street. As many Erieites are new to cigar lounges, we thought it might be prudent to create a basic guide for what to expect at a cigar lounge and the basic rules that you can apply to most lounges across the country.

Frequently Asked Questions About Cigar Lounges

1. What is a cigar lounge?

A cigar lounge is a designated space where people can smoke cigars in a relaxed and comfortable environment. These lounges often provide a variety of amenities, including a selection of cigars, beverages, and comfortable seating areas. The distinguishing feature contrasting a lounge from a shop is your ability to actually… Lounge!

2. Do I need to be a member to visit a cigar lounge?

While some cigar lounges operate on a membership basis, many, including The Brig Cigar Lounge, welcome both members and non-members. Membership often comes with perks such as discounts, exclusive events, and access to private areas.

3. Can I bring my own cigars to the lounge?

Policies vary by lounge. At The Brig Cigar Lounge, you’re welcome to bring your own cigars, though we highly encourage you to explore our curated selection of premium cigars available for purchase and require at least 1 cigar be purchased per visit.

4. Is there a dress code?

Cigar lounges typically maintain a casual yet refined dress code. While suits and ties are not mandatory, attire that reflects the lounge's upscale atmosphere is appreciated.

5. Are food and drinks available?

Many cigar lounges offer a selection of beverages, including coffee, whiskey, and cocktails. Some also provide light snacks. The Brig Cigar Lounge features a BYOB drink policy (with a $10 corkage fee for non-members) so you can choose your own spirit to complement your cigar and not have to pay inflated bar pricing for every pour!

Cigar Lounge Etiquette for Beginners

To ensure you and those around you have an enjoyable experience, here are some key etiquette tips to follow:

  • Respect the Lounge Rules: Each cigar lounge has its own set of rules. Familiarize yourself with them upon arrival by reading the signage or conversing with the staff.

  • Don't Inhale: Cigars are meant to be savored, not inhaled. Draw the smoke into your mouth to taste the flavors before exhaling. Trust us, you’ll know if you’ve inhaled and you won’t want to do it again!

  • Light Your Cigar Properly: Use a butane lighter or wooden match to evenly light your cigar. Avoid using regular lighters as they can impart unpleasant flavors. Don’t be afraid to ask us to show you how!

  • Be Mindful of Ash: Make sure your cigar’s ash falls into the ashtray rather than the table, floor, or on your clothes. It’s much easier to clean that way!

  • Engage in Conversation: Cigar lounges are social spaces by nature. Feel free to engage in conversation, but be respectful of those who prefer solitude. Best practices are just like a first date: No politics, no religion.

Tips for Selecting Your First Cigar and Understanding Types

Choosing your first cigar can be daunting, but it doesn't have to be. Here are some tips to guide you:

  • Start Mild: For beginners, milder cigars are a great starting point. They are smoother and less likely to overwhelm your senses.

  • Consider Size: Larger cigars typically offer a cooler, more complex smoking experience, while smaller cigars are quicker and often more intense. The most common cigar vitola (shape/size) is a Robusto, which is right in the middle!

  • Ask for Recommendations: Don’t hesitate to seek advice from the staff at The Brig Cigar Lounge. They can recommend cigars based on your preferences and experience level.

Understanding Different Types of Cigars

  • Parejos: These have straight sides and are the most common shape. Examples include Robusto, Corona, and Churchill.

  • Figurados: These cigars have irregular shapes and include varieties like Torpedo, Pyramid, and Perfecto.

  • Wrapper Colors: Cigar wrappers range from light (Claro, Connecticut) to dark (Maduro, Oscuro), each offering different flavor profiles. Generally speaking, a lighter wrapper means a lighter, less intense cigar, a darker wrapper means a more full-bodied cigar.
